CHAPTER SIXTEEN

TUESDAY MORNING, since Sage had classes and wouldn’t be coming by the greenhouse, instead of getting right to work, Jim called Thairapy. Jolene’s mother’s salon and spa, which Seth Harper had remodeled, was located in the old lighthouse keeper’s house. Jolene had joined the business after returning from Los Angeles.

Ten minutes later, she greeted him with a wide, friendly smile. “I was glad to get your call,” she said. “Even though I had you booked for the first of the month.” Jim always had a haircut on the first day of the month. Unless it fell on a Sunday. Then it was moved forward to Monday.

“My schedule changed,” he said as he sat down in the chair she’d swung around for him. “I’m grateful for you fitting me into your work schedule.”

“Oh, it’s no big deal. I had some time before my next client. Also, I would’ve fit you in anyway, so you’ll look all spiffed up for your date tomorrow.”

“You know about that?” he asked as she put a black cape around his shoulders.

“This is Honeymoon Harbor,” she reminded him. “But I didn’t hear it through the grapevine. I had a girls’ night dinner last night at Lily’s, and she said that she and Burke and Chelsea and Gabe are going out with you and Sage.”

“On a triple date,” he said as he followed her over to the shampoo sink. “Gabe thought it would be a good way to break the ice. We’re going to see Casablanca, then have dinner at Luca’s.”

“That sounds like a lot of fun. I love that movie, although I always cry at the end. You might want to take some tissues, in case Sage doesn’t bring any with her. And don’t worry, when you’re done, I’ll have you looking as hot as Nick Jonas, whose hair I cut once when he and his brothers did a concert in LA.”

Jim didn’t have any idea who Nick Jonas was, but he trusted Jolene not to do anything crazy. One nice thing about getting a haircut from her was that he wasn’t forced to participate in the conversation, because she always talked while she snipped away at his hair. Today she chatted about the scented candles she and her mother were making to sell for the Heritage Day celebration, and filled him in on other local news, including her mother dating Mike Mannion, Burke’s artist uncle.

“I swear,” she said, grinning at him in the mirror, “you’d think she was sixteen again. She had such a tough life until a few years ago, especially after the cancer scare, that she really deserves to be happy. She went there with some book club friends for his wine and art night.”

“Wine and art?”

“They drink wine while he teaches them to paint. From what she’s told me, it’s grand fun.” She pointed the scissors at a watercolor of the mountain meadows in full bloom framed on the wall. “This is one of her works. Mike says she’s very talented, and they’ve been spending a lot of time together while he helps her explore her artistic horizons.
